Policymaking in the private and public sectors involves different considerations and complexities due to their distinct goals and objectives. While profit maximization is the primary goal of private corporations, government objectives are often multifaceted and sometimes even contradictory. Since public policy analysis involves evaluating government actions against these objectives, it is essential to understand what a government's goals can be. This session explores some of these goals.
Outcome: Gain insight into how the government's differing goals translate into policies that impact businesses.
-
This session will focus on the eight categories of governmental actions. It will discuss the negative externalities that might arise out of each of these actions and help participants visualise these eight actions into an analytical model that frames each of the actions in terms of "the capacity required" & "the extent of intervention involved".
Outcome: Ability to predict the likely course of action governments can employ for different policy problems. -
This session examines market failures through real-world examples that prompt government action. It provides an understanding of the range, context, and implications of government intervention. Participants are introduced to the tools available for the government to intervene, considering the scale and extent of intervention required.
Outcomes:
Gain a deep understanding of situations where markets can fail in delivering welfare-enhancing outcomes and how these can be corrected.
Understand the likely set of governmental interventions in response to these market failures and how they could lead to harm.
-
This session introduces participants to key geopolitical and geo-economic trends and developments that are likely to impact businesses in India. It will specifically examine their effects on India Inc., from protectionist trade regimes to supply chain de-risking. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the geopolitical context in which India operates, particularly in high-technology domains where governments actively intervene to shape industry incentives.
Outcome: Grasp the current geopolitical and geo-economic trends that impact India's economic growth and, consequently, firms' decisions.
-
This session provides an overview of the current state of the Indian economy based on macroeconomic indicators and trends. It will identify both the opportunities and challenges for India Inc. through a public policy lens. It will introduce participants to consequential policy trends that have impacted the Indian economy and the areas where the government could focus on doubling down on strengths and mitigating risks.
Outcome: Identify possible opportunities and risks for a business based on an understanding of the potential policy approaches of the government. Additionally, understanding the sources of growth for the Indian economy can help in informed decision-making.
